Exactly 30 years after the original Toy Story movie debuted, establishing Pixar as a leading film company and introducing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia pinned to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
