Catherine's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will hear a selection of carols, music and readings from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The theme of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been helped by the charity, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the concert.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by television on December 24th.
